The Littermittee

June and her pal Lorelei noticed that there was a lot of trash on the playground at school and put their heads together to do something about it. They came up with the idea of forming a Littermittee. (Don’t make the same mistake as me and assume that’s a portmanteau of “litter” and “committee.” It’s not. “It’s JUST LITTERMITTEE, Dad!!”)

I loved the idea and told them I’d be happy to help. First, though, June and Lorelei made an eye catching poster:

June asked if I could digitize it so that her teacher could make copies, so that’s what I did:

Seeing as how the Littermittee came to be during the dead of winter, the project went dormant for a little while. Once Kittery started to thaw, though, the idea was reborn. The group expanded to include a bunch of other girls from class and they did their first official clean-up:

The Littermittee also had the full support of the principal, who happened to have a friend in the poster printing business. So, the girls made up some more posters:

When the third graders did a field trip to the Kittery Museum, they made a side-trip to the town offices and did a mock school board meeting. Of course, June got to be Madam Chairwoman:

And they even gave her a gavel:

The whole event was recorded for posterity:

Then—and I think this is the coolest part—the girls got to present their idea to the actual school board at an actual school board meeting!

June was stoked about the whole thing. We’re super proud of her initiative and bravery!
