cephalopod fossil

We’d driven over the rocks along the Black River on I-81 many times. It always looked like a cool spot from a distance, but unreachable. As it turns out, we were totally wrong! It’s easily accessed from a trail right next to Jefferson Community College (where we sometimes eat burritos while the kids run around in the athletic fields).

We walked along the smooth, flat, rocky shoreline on a cold, snowy day in May and kept on seeing these weird shapes in the rocks. It took us a long time to realize that they were fossils! Some kind of cephalopod, if I’m not mistaken.
