Gaviota Peak

One of our favorite hikes, back in Santa Barbara, was to go up to the top of Gaviota Peak. There’s a parking lot just north of the tunnel where the 101 turns inland. With several options for hiking up, it was a trip that stood up well to repeat trips. And for some reason, perhaps because of the strange wind patterns around the mountains, there were always weird cloud formations.

perfect

Not everybody’s idea of perfection, but I’m getting a little choked up just looking at this picture! I love those calm, gray days at Devereux. A waist high swell coming from a horizon barely distinguishable below the cloudy sky… Heavy kelp beds on the outside, glassing it up on the inside… And best of all, not another person around.

(I almost threw a grayscale filter on this one to make it all artsy-fartsy, but then I decided that the muted browns of the kelp added something indispensable to the shot.)

roller coaster lights

I brought my camera to the carnival in Santa Barbara once. The highlight of the event was a huge barn filled with rabbits in cages. I guess the competition was over, because when we got there: not a person in sight! Just rows and rows of rabbits, creepily chewing in their cages.

There was a little roller coaster with some cool lights right next to the barn. (And, further away, this!)

Gretna

I just got back from a conference in New Orleans. (The annual meeting of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, US Chapter.) While there, Travis and I stayed with Travis’s friend Ben. This turned out to be a good thing, since Ben practically has the key to the city. Every block, he knew somebody! We spent each night (usually until around 4am) in backrooms and on balconies, often drinking for free!

On our last day, Travis and I needed a little break from things and rode the free ferry over to Gretna. On this ferry, there was a lady with a hat.

I think you're overreacting.
