My old man used to tell me that indigenous peoples used to use birch bark to wipe with. Maybe so, maybe not. But either way, it’s a whole lot better than the options we reported to the boys of Stuart Hall: rocks, sticks, pine needles, pine cones, or (best of all) a handful of dirt.
